Erato Kozakou MArkoullis (1949), The first Minister of Foreign Affairs in Cyprus

Born in Limassol in 1949, Erato Kozakou Marcoullis graduated with degrees in Law (1967-1972) and Political Science (1972-1974) from the University of Athens. From 1975 to 1978, she pursued her Ph.D. in Sociology and Political Science at the University of Helsinki in Finland. She began her career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in September 1980. She served in various diplomatic missions of the Republic and represented Cyprus in numerous international organizations and conferences under the auspices of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Commonwealth. From 1996 to 1998, she served as Ambassador to Sweden, concurrently accredited to Finland, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. She also served for a decade, from 1980 to 1988, in the permanent representation of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Nations. She was also the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States in Washington, D.C., from 1998 to September 2003, with additional accreditation to Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, and as Ambassador to Brazil. From September 2003, she held the position of Director of the Cyprus and Euro-Turkish Affairs Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus. Simultaneously, she was the Ambassador to Lebanon and Jordan based in Nicosia.

On July 14, 2007, she was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Tassos Papadopoulos, serving until the assumption of power by the Christofias government in February 2008. In March 2010, she was appointed Minister of Communications and Works in the Christofias government.

Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis has given lectures at numerous universities and think tanks in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Finland, and other countries where she was accredited. She has also been honored with awards in both the United States and the other countries of her accreditation. She has authored books and poetry collections.
